The mountain biking was unbelievable. It was both challenging and rewarding. I loved the different terrain and remarkable views along the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. We never knew what to expect around the next turn. This route was perfect for us! In total it was 6 epic days of riding, 180 beautiful miles, and 15,000 feet of elevation gain, making this trip one of best vacations I have ever taken. Portugal Bike Tours comes highly recommended.
Bike Tour on the Portuguese Central Camino
Portuguese Central Camino bike tour highlights
Experience the Portuguese Central Camino by bike on a carefully designed 5-day cycling journey from Porto to Santiago de Compostela, crossing northern Portugal and Galicia and covering more than 200 km on the way to one of Europe’s great pilgrimage destinations.
Designed for travellers who want to experience the Camino but don’t have time for a longer journey, this itinerary begins with a private transfer from Porto to Barcelos. From there, every kilometre is ridden towards Santiago, following the historic Portuguese Way through Ponte de Lima, Valença, Tui, Pontevedra and Padrón before the unforgettable final arrival at Santiago Cathedral.
This is not simply the walking Camino transferred onto a bicycle. Drawing on our experience designing and guiding cycling journeys in Portugal and Spain, we have optimised the route specifically for cyclists, combining the character of the historic Camino with quiet roads, forest tracks and rideable trails, while avoiding unnecessarily technical sections.
Along the way, stay in carefully selected hotels, cross the Minho River from Portugal into Spain, meet pilgrims from around the world and experience the landscapes, villages, food and traditions that make the Camino much more than a cycling route.
What makes this tour different:
- Five days of cycling to Santiago, ideal for travellers who want to experience the Camino but have limited time.
- More than 200 km by bike, covering the cycling distance required to qualify for the official pilgrimage certificate when the applicable credential and stamping requirements are completed.
- A continuous cycling journey from Barcelos to Santiago de Compostela, with every day bringing you closer to the Cathedral.
- Follow the historic Portuguese Central Camino through northern Portugal and Galicia, crossing from Portugal into Spain by bike.
- Discover some of the Camino’s most memorable towns, including Ponte de Lima, Valença, Tui, Pontevedra and Padrón.
- A route specifically optimised by Live Love Ride for cycling, preserving the character of the Camino while avoiding unnecessarily difficult or technical walking sections.
- Carefully selected accommodation throughout the journey, with premium hotel upgrades available for guests looking for an even higher level of comfort.
- Gravel and mountain bikes for regular cyclists, with e-bikes available for riders who want additional assistance on the climbs.
- The unforgettable experience of completing your final kilometres through Santiago and arriving by bicycle at Praza do Obradoiro and Santiago Cathedral.
- A compact Camino without sacrificing the experience: five memorable rides, two countries, more than 200 km and one extraordinary destination.
Immerse yourself into the Portuguese Central Camino
Portuguese Central Camino bike tour itinerary
Day 1: Barcelos to Ponte de Lima
Approx. 31 km – 450 m climbing
Meet your guide in Porto for a private transfer north to Barcelos, where your Portuguese Camino adventure begins. After a professional bike fitting and tour briefing, set off along the Portuguese Central Camino towards Ponte de Lima. Leaving Barcelos behind, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the peaceful landscapes of northern Portugal, riding along quiet country roads, forest paths and cycling-friendly sections of the historic Camino. Small villages, vineyards and traditional farming communities accompany you as the familiar yellow arrows and scallop shells begin pointing the way north towards Santiago. The route gradually enters the beautiful Lima Valley before reaching Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal's oldest and most charming towns. Cross its iconic medieval bridge over the Lima River and ride into the historic centre, with its cobbled streets, traditional manor houses and lively cafés. After checking in, enjoy the rest of the afternoon relaxing at your hotel or exploring the town and its beautiful riverside setting.
Hotel for the night: Paço de Vitorino Premium option: Carmo's Boutique Hotel
Day 2: Ponte de Lima to Valença
Approx. 45 km – 850 m climbing
After breakfast, continue north along one of the most memorable sections of the Portuguese Central Camino. Leaving Ponte de Lima, ride through peaceful villages, vineyards and dense woodland as you make your way towards the hills separating the Lima and Minho valleys. Today's stage includes one of the most challenging climbs on the Portuguese section of the Camino, as you ascend through the beautiful landscapes around Labruja. Our cycling-optimised route uses alternatives around some of the roughest sections of the traditional pilgrim trail, allowing you to experience the character of the Camino without tackling unnecessarily technical terrain. Once the main climbing is behind you, enjoy a rewarding ride north through the green Minho countryside towards Valença, dramatically positioned above the River Minho and the Spanish border. Finish your ride inside the magnificent Fortaleza de Valença, a historic walled town of narrow streets, traditional shops and spectacular views across the river towards Tui and Galicia. Tonight, you'll sleep within the fortress walls, with Spain and the next chapter of your Camino waiting just across the river.
Hotel for the night: Pousada de Valença Premium option: Room upgrade at Pousada de Valença
Day 3: Valença to Pontevedra
Approx. 56 km – 850 m climbing
Today your Camino crosses its first border. Ride through the historic fortifications of Valença before crossing the International Bridge over the River Minho into Tui, leaving Portugal behind and entering Galicia. Take some time to admire Tui's impressive medieval cathedral and historic centre before continuing north through the lush Galician countryside. Forest tracks, quiet roads and traditional villages lead you deeper into Spain as you follow the historic Portuguese Way towards Santiago. Continue through O Porriño and onwards to Redondela, where the Central and Coastal routes of the Portuguese Camino come together. From here, the landscape opens towards the beautiful Ría de Vigo before climbing again around Cesantes. One of the highlights of the day comes at Ponte Sampaio, where you'll cross the Verdugo River over its historic stone bridge before tackling a final climb and enjoying the rewarding descent towards Pontevedra. Arrive in the heart of Pontevedra, one of Galicia's most attractive cities. Its largely pedestrianised historic centre is perfect for exploring on foot after the ride, with elegant stone streets, lively plazas and plenty of places to enjoy the local Galician atmosphere.
Hotel for the night: Parador de Pontevedra Premium option: Room upgrade at Parador de Pontevedra
Day 4: Pontevedra to Padrón
Approx. 41 km – 550 m climbing
After breakfast, continue your pilgrimage north towards Santiago. By now, the Camino signs, fellow pilgrims and changing landscapes create the unmistakable feeling that your final destination is getting closer. Leaving Pontevedra, ride once again into rural Galicia, surrounded by lush woodland, vineyards, small villages and peaceful country landscapes. The rolling terrain makes for a beautifully varied day on the bike, combining sections of the historic Camino with quiet rural roads and tracks. Along the way, pass through Caldas de Reis, an attractive thermal town and traditional stopping point for pilgrims, before continuing through the Galician countryside towards Padrón. Your destination has a particularly important place in the story of St. James and is also famous throughout Spain for its small green Pimientos de Padrón. After checking in, explore the town, visit its botanical gardens or climb to the Santiaguiño do Monte viewpoint. And, of course, make sure you try the famous peppers. Most are mild, but every now and then you'll find the one that isn't.
Hotel for the night: Pazo de Lestrove Premium option: Pazo de Arretén
Day 5: Padrón to Santiago de Compostela
Approx. 26 km – 475 m climbing
Today, you ride to Santiago. After breakfast, begin the final stage of your Portuguese Camino. The Cathedral is now close, but the route still has a few final climbs in store as you make your way through the rolling landscapes south of the city. Ride through small Galician villages, woodland and historic churches as the signs for Santiago become increasingly frequent. The excitement builds with every kilometre as walkers and cyclists from different Camino routes begin to converge on the same destination. Finally, enter Santiago de Compostela and ride through its historic streets towards the Cathedral and Praza do Obradoiro, the symbolic finishing point of the Camino de Santiago. Arriving beneath the towers of Santiago Cathedral by bicycle is a moment to remember. Take time to celebrate your journey from Portugal into Spain and five days of riding along one of Europe's great pilgrimage routes. After checking in at your hotel, the rest of the afternoon is yours. Visit the Cathedral and Pilgrim's Office, wander Santiago's medieval streets and traditional markets, or simply find a terrace and enjoy the atmosphere of the city. Tonight is your final evening together and the perfect opportunity to celebrate completing your Camino over some outstanding Galician food and wine.
Hotel for the night: San Francisco Hotel Monumento Premium options: Parador de Santiago de Compostela or Quinta da Auga
Day 6: Santiago de Compostela to Porto
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at your hotel and one final morning in Santiago de Compostela. At the scheduled time, meet your driver for your private transfer back to Porto Airport or your hotel in Porto. After five days on the bike, your journey has taken you from the historic landscapes of northern Portugal, across the River Minho into Galicia and all the way to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Your Portuguese Camino may have come to an end, but the memories of the ride, and perhaps the desire to return for another Camino, will stay with you long after you leave. For guests wishing to continue their travels, additional nights in Santiago, Porto or elsewhere in Portugal and Spain can also be arranged.

Why we designed this journey
Not everyone has eight days to experience the Camino. We designed the Essential Portuguese Camino for cyclists who want to ride a meaningful, continuous journey to Santiago de Compostela, but have less than a week available. Rather than simply shortening the riding stages or removing some of the best parts of the route, we start with a private transfer from Porto to Barcelos. From there, every kilometre you ride takes you closer to Santiago, crossing northern Portugal, the Minho River and the green landscapes of Galicia over five carefully designed cycling stages. The result is a shorter Camino without compromising the experience: five great days on the bike, historic towns such as Ponte de Lima, Valença and Pontevedra, carefully selected hotels and the unforgettable final ride into Santiago de Compostela. It's the Portuguese Camino distilled into five memorable rides, while maintaining the comfort, support and attention to detail of a Live Love Ride journey.
Who is this tour for?
This tour is ideal for active travellers who want to experience the Portuguese Camino by bike but have limited time. With daily rides between approximately 28 and 60 km, it offers a rewarding multi-day cycling challenge without requiring the fitness or training of a performance-focused cycling tour. Regular cyclists will be comfortable completing the journey on a gravel or mountain bike, while recreational cyclists can enjoy exactly the same experience on an e-bike. If you don't cycle regularly, or simply want to enjoy the landscapes and Camino experience without worrying about the climbs, we strongly recommend choosing an e-bike. This is not a race to Santiago. The journey has been designed to leave time to stop in villages, visit historic Camino landmarks, enjoy local food and experience the atmosphere of the Portuguese Way along the way.
Terrain
The Portuguese Central Camino is a historic pilgrimage route rather than a purpose-built cycling trail, and that variety is an important part of the experience. Expect a mixture of quiet country roads, forest tracks, compact gravel, rural lanes, cobbled sections and sections of the traditional Camino itself. Our route has been specifically optimised for cycling. Where the walking Camino becomes unnecessarily steep, rough or technical for bicycles, we use carefully selected alternatives that preserve the character and direction of the Camino while creating a more enjoyable riding experience. Northern Portugal and Galicia are naturally hilly, so there is climbing throughout the journey. The most demanding stages are between Ponte de Lima and Valença and between Valença and Pontevedra, with approximately 850 metres of climbing each day – e-bikes are an option. The remaining stages are shorter and more moderate, culminating in the final 28 km ride from Padrón into Santiago. We recommend mountain bikes for confident regular cyclists. E-bikes are an excellent choice for recreational riders and for anyone who wants additional assistance on the climbs while still enjoying the full Camino experience.

/ Riding is a great part of my life, and I ride my bike regularly with my friends. I am comfortable with rides of 2 to 3 hours, or even more at a relatively strong pace. I like to be challenged and to surpass obstacles or just ride smoothly in a peloton.
You will get to feel different riding experiences, from tougher climbs to rolling along in great company. You’ll have time to enjoy the great landscapes, gain speed in the descents and also push yourself and climb those tough hills. You’ll enjoy the variety of terrain, riding in a peloton and pushing a little harder just before the stop at the café.

I enjoy all riding experiences, from big climbs to long, technical descents, especially the ones that allow me to push my limits and make long lasting memories.
You’ll get to ride in a peloton along with your peers but also challenge them on the long climbs.
