On a self-guided cycling holiday, you ride without a guide accompanying you each day.
Before your first ride, our local team meets you for a personal briefing and bike fitting. We’ll explain the itinerary, prepare your bicycle, help you with navigation and make sure you’re comfortable with everything before you set off.
From there, each day is yours.
You’ll follow carefully designed routes using our navigation tools, while your luggage is transported to your next accommodation. When you arrive, your room is waiting and your bags are already taken care of.
And although you’re riding independently, you’re not on your own. Our local team remains available throughout your journey if you need assistance.

Live Love Ride is a Portugal-based cycling tour operator, and we have been designing and operating bike tours across the country since 2014. Our self-guided routes are built from years of riding, scouting and supporting cyclists on the roads and trails of Portugal, not simply created from a map.
With our own teams and bike stations in Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve, we manage our bicycle fleet, prepare our bikes and support our tours locally. That on-the-ground presence is particularly important on a self-guided journey: although you ride independently, there is a real local team behind the trip if you need us.
Over the years, we have welcomed cyclists from around the world and developed routes throughout Portugal, from the vineyards of the Douro and Alentejo to the Atlantic Coast, Algarve, Portuguese Camino and the islands of the Azores. We use that experience to choose not only where you ride, but which roads are enjoyable by bike, where it makes sense to stop, which climbs are worth taking on and how each day fits into the journey as a whole.

Self-guided cycling is particularly well suited to couples, friends and independent travelers who enjoy making each day their own.
You don’t need to be an expert cyclist, but you should be comfortable riding without a guide beside you and following navigation on a smartphone or GPS device.
The physical difficulty depends much more on the destination and itinerary you choose.
Some of our routes are accessible to relatively new cyclists, particularly with an e-bike. Others involve significant distances and climbing and are designed for experienced riders.
That’s why we grade our tours by cycling level and offer different bike options. If you’re unsure, our team can help you choose an itinerary and bicycle that match your experience and fitness.
The biggest difference is independence.
On a guided bike tour, our guides accompany the journey, providing in-person support, local knowledge and, depending on the tour, vehicle assistance throughout the rides.
On a self-guided bike tour, you ride independently. We still organize the route, hotels, luggage and other logistics, but there is no guide determining the rhythm of your day.
Neither is necessarily better.
Choose guided if you value having a local expert with you throughout the journey and want a higher level of in-person support.
Choose self-guided if you prefer to ride as a couple, family or group of friends and want the freedom to decide exactly how each day unfolds.

No. We offer self-guided tours for different cycling levels, from relatively accessible itineraries to demanding routes for experienced cyclists. What matters is choosing a tour that matches your ability. E-bikes can also make hillier destinations accessible to riders who would otherwise find the climbing too demanding.
You’ll receive the routes for your itinerary through our navigation system, allowing you to follow each day’s ride on your smartphone. During your initial briefing, we’ll make sure you understand how everything works before you begin riding.
On point-to-point self-guided tours where luggage transfer is included, we transport your luggage between accommodations. You ride with only what you need for the day and your luggage is transferred to your next hotel.
Our bicycles are prepared and checked before every tour, and you’ll receive the equipment needed to deal with simple issues on the road. If you encounter a problem you can’t resolve yourself, our local team is available to help and arrange assistance when necessary.
Yes. E-bikes are available on many of our self-guided tours and can be an excellent choice in hillier regions such as the Douro or for groups with different fitness levels. The available bike types are shown on each individual tour.
Absolutely. Self-guided tours are particularly popular with couples and small groups because you travel with your own party rather than joining a guided group departure.
Self-guided tours generally offer much greater flexibility in departure dates than scheduled guided departures, subject to hotel, bike and service availability. Check the individual tour or contact our team for the dates you’re considering.
You’ll have contact with our local team throughout your journey. If you have a problem with the bike, navigation or another aspect of your itinerary, you can contact us for remote assistance.
Yes. Accommodation is included in our multi-day self-guided packages according to the itinerary you select. We choose hotels based on their location, comfort and suitability for the journey, so you don’t need to coordinate accommodation from one stage to the next.
Portugal is very well suited to self-guided cycling when the route is properly designed. Rather than simply directing you along the most obvious road between destinations, our itineraries prioritize roads and tracks that we know from riding and operating tours in these regions ourselves.
