Several years ago, Darren Alff, founder of Bicycle Touring Pro, joined us to explore the Douro Valley and the Douro International Natural Park on what is now our signature Douro River Wine Country Bike Tour. During the journey, Darren documented the experience, capturing not only the spectacular scenery but also the atmosphere, roads and authentic moments that make this one of Portugal’s most rewarding cycling holidays.
Darren has been helping and inspiring cyclists around the world to start their own bicycle touring adventures, and it was a great pleasure having him with us. With his experience, we were not only able to share this beautiful region with more people around the world, but also improve our own adventures.
For cyclists around the world, the Douro is one of Europe’s hidden gems.
It combines quiet roads, UNESCO-listed vineyards, outstanding gastronomy and genuine Portuguese hospitality with the kind of varied terrain that makes every day different. The journey begins among the famous wine estates of the Douro Valley before heading east into the remote landscapes of the Douro International Natural Park, where medieval villages, granite castles and dramatic river canyons reveal a side of Portugal that few visitors ever discover.
It’s this diversity that makes the tour so memorable, and why it remains our most popular cycling holiday in the region!
This video offers a genuine glimpse into Live Love Ride’s Douro River Wine Country Bike Tour.
Throughout the week, riders experience:
The Douro River Wine Country Bike Tour isn’t simply our most popular itinerary – it’s where the Live Love Ride story began.
It was the very first guided bike tour we ever designed, and over the years it has continually evolved as we’ve discovered quieter roads, better hotels, exceptional local restaurants and unforgettable viewpoints.
Today, it represents everything we believe a cycling holiday should be: spectacular riding, authentic local experiences and meaningful connections with the places and people that make Portugal so special.
Operating from our Porto hub, with team members who proudly call the Douro Valley home, we continue refining this journey every season so that every departure is even better than the last.
If this video inspires you to explore the Douro, our Douro River Wine Country Bike Tour follows many of the roads and landscapes featured throughout the film, taking you from the UNESCO-listed vineyards of the Douro Valley to Portugal’s medieval frontier near the Spanish border.
Not everyone has a full week available, which is why we’ve created several ways to experience this remarkable region.
